Glucopuncture

Glucopuncture is a new injection technique for licensed practioners who are looking for an inexpensive easy-to-learn injection technique for the treatment of nonrheumatic musculoskeletal conditions. We use isotonic glucose (or dextrose) injections into dermis, muscles and ligaments as an alternative for cortisone injections. Glucopuncture is originally designed for doctors / patients who have no access to MRI, ultrasound-guided hydrodissection, and state of the art surgery. We also want to introduce GP in low-income countries for doctors who work with very limited means in remote regions. Projects in Africa, Asia and America are about to start. But we also want to introduce it in countries where modern medical facilities are abundant. It is obvious that more research and clinical studies are warranted to confirm our anecdotal findings and to convince our colleagues.

Disclaimer

Although there are more and more studies and research data appearing about glucose 5% (or dextrose 5%) injections, the method of glucopuncture (GP) has not been approved (yet) by official agencies such as the EMA or FDA. GP is an injection procedure which uses Glucose 5% ampoules which are obviously used off-label (because these ampoules are designed for IV application and not for SC or IM injection). This means that the treating physician is responsible for the safety of his or her treatment. The same issue applies to, for example, intra-foraminal corticosteroid injections which are also off-label but cortisone injections have a less interesting safety profile than glucose 5% in water. One of the goals of GP is to replace corticosteroid injections by glucose 5% because of its interesting safety profile. A variety of doctors perform this new procedure, including family physicians, physical-medicine specialists and sports doctors. Glucopuncture is not yet reimbursed by medical insurance companies but this may change in the near future as soon as it becomes clear how interesting the cost-benefit ratio is. The author of the GP book and website cannot make any solid claims yet about the efficacy, safety and long-term benefits of glucopuncture. This website and the GP book are an invitation to the medical community to conduct more fundamental research in this field. It is also expected that soon official organizations will sponsor more clinical studies about GP to confirm the efficacy of this method - despite the fact that glucose 5% cannot be patented and as a result is not interesting to the pharmaceutical companies. It is obvious that the information on this website is offered to licensed health care providers only. Patients cannot act or rely upon this information without seeking independent professional medical advice. The publisher and the author do not claim any indications or clinical effects of the therapy described on this website or in the GP textbook.
